Picking up a rental car at the airport can make onward travel smooth, especially when you land with luggage and a tight schedule. It can also feel rushed if you are unsure where to go, what documents to carry, or how the handover works. A little preparation before landing helps you move from the terminal to the road without confusion.
Confirm the pickup point before you land
Airport rental counters and pickup points are not always in the same place. Some are inside the terminal, while others require a short transfer to a nearby lot. Before your flight, confirm the exact pickup location, the provider name, and how to reach the counter from arrivals. Save the address and contact details on your phone so you can find them even without internet access after landing.
Keep documents ready for a quick handover
At the counter, you will usually need your driving licence, booking confirmation, and payment card. Keep these together in an easily reachable bag, rather than buried in checked luggage. If additional drivers will be listed, their documents should also be ready. Having everything in one place speeds up the handover and reduces the chance of a delay when you are tired after a flight.
Allow buffer time after landing
Flights can be delayed, baggage can take time, and airport counters can have queues. Building buffer time between landing and the scheduled pickup helps you avoid stress if things run late. If your flight is significantly delayed, contact the provider as early as possible to confirm that the booking can still be honoured. Early communication is far better than arriving to find the booking changed.
Inspect the car even when you are in a hurry
It is tempting to skip the inspection after a long flight, but this is exactly when a quick check matters most. Walk around the car, note any existing marks, photograph the condition, and check the fuel level before driving away. This takes only a few minutes and protects you at return. If you notice anything, raise it with the counter staff before leaving the airport area.
Plan your exit route from the airport
Before you drive off, take a moment to plan your route out of the airport and to your first destination. Airport roads can be busy and confusing for first-time visitors. Setting up navigation before you start driving, and confirming parking and drop-off arrangements at your destination, makes the first leg of the trip calmer. A prepared start sets the tone for the whole rental.
