An annual maintenance contract, often called an AMC, is a service plan that covers scheduled visits and sometimes repairs for a home appliance over a year. It can be useful for appliances that need regular cleaning and checks, such as air conditioners, chimneys, and water purifiers. Before signing up, it helps to understand exactly what is covered, what is excluded, and how service visits are arranged.
What an AMC Usually Covers
Most contracts include a set number of routine service visits during the year, along with basic cleaning and inspection. Some plans also cover labour for repairs, while others cover only the routine visits and charge separately for repair work and parts. Read the plan document carefully and ask the provider to explain any term you do not understand. Do not assume that a plan called comprehensive covers every part or every type of fault.
What Is Often Excluded
Parts are a common exclusion, or they may be covered only for certain items. Damage caused by misuse, power problems, pest damage, or unauthorised repairs may also be excluded. Some plans limit the number of visits, charge for extra visits, or exclude appliances above a certain age. Ask for the exclusion list in writing before you pay, so you are not surprised when a claim is declined later.
Compare the Plan With Pay Per Visit Service
To judge whether a plan makes sense, think about how often the appliance actually needs service and what a single visit usually involves. If an appliance is used heavily and needs regular cleaning, a plan with scheduled visits may be convenient. If it is used lightly and has rarely needed attention, paying per visit may be simpler. There is no single right answer, and the best choice depends on usage, appliance age, and how reliable local service is in your area.
Check How Visits Are Booked and Completed
Ask how to book a visit, how far in advance you need to request it, and what happens if a technician does not arrive as scheduled. Also ask whether the same provider handles both routine visits and breakdown calls, and whether breakdown visits count against your scheduled visits. A clear booking process and a single point of contact make the plan much easier to use through the year.
Read the Renewal and Cancellation Terms
Some plans renew automatically, while others need a fresh sign up each year. Ask about renewal, cancellation, and refunds if you move house, sell the appliance, or stop using the service. If you pay by credit card, keep the plan document, the payment receipt, and any renewal notice together, and check your statement to confirm the amount charged matches what was agreed. Clear renewal terms prevent unwanted charges in the next year.
Questions to Ask Before You Sign
Before committing, ask what each visit includes, which parts are covered, how breakdowns are handled, and how quickly help is available. Ask who to contact for complaints and what proof you will receive after each visit. A provider that answers these questions plainly and puts the terms in writing is easier to trust than one that relies on verbal promises alone. Take time to read the fine print, especially for plans sold during a repair visit.
