App Store and Play Store Billing: Card vs UPI vs Carrier Billing Compared
Published: 19 October 2026 Category: comparisons | cardbuzz
Every app purchase, subscription and in-app top-up flows through one of two toll booths — Apple's App Store or Google Play — and each offers multiple ways to pay: saved card, UPI, netbanking, or carrier billing added to the phone bill. The cheapest option is rarely the default.
The four payment routes
Saved credit card. The straightforward route: the store charges the card, the card earns its online/digital reward rate. For subscriptions, this is the set-and-forget option. Watch the forex angle — stores billing in foreign currency add the card's markup.
UPI. Both stores accept UPI in India. It is instant and free, but it earns no card reward. For one-off small purchases (a ₹99 app, a ₹49 game item), UPI is perfectly rational — the foregone reward is paise.
Carrier billing. The charge lands on the postpaid bill or deducts from prepaid balance. Convenient, but it earns nothing, obscures the spend inside the phone bill, and prepaid users pay from balance that could have earned rewards elsewhere. It is the worst option for anyone optimising rewards.
Gift cards / store credit. Buying store credit on a card and spending it later adds a layer that can fall into reward exclusions (the gift-card trap from the grocery series applies here too). Only worth it when the store credit itself is discounted.
The subscription rule
For recurring subscriptions (the ₹149–₹999 monthly charges), always use the saved credit card with the best digital/subscription earn rate. The amounts are small individually but permanent — a ₹499/month subscription is ₹5,988 a year, and the difference between earning 5% and 0% on it is ~₹300 a year per subscription. Households with four subscriptions leave over ₹1,000 a year on the table by paying via UPI or carrier billing.
The one-off rule
For single purchases under ~₹200, the payment method barely matters — pick whatever is fastest. Above that, the card's reward starts to outweigh the convenience of UPI. The threshold is personal, but having one is what separates optimised from accidental spending.
The hygiene layer
App-store subscriptions are the hardest to audit because they hide inside Apple/Google receipts, not merchant names. Once a quarter, open the subscriptions page in the App Store / Play Store settings and cancel what you do not use. Then check the card statement for the same. Two lists, one truth.
Payment options and billing currencies vary by store and region. Figures are illustrative; check your card's reward terms for digital transactions.
