The Combined Defence Services examination opens the door to the Indian Military Academy, the Indian Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy and the Officers Training Academy. For a beginner, the syllabus can look enormous, but a clear plan and steady preparation make it manageable.
Understand what the exam asks for
The CDS written examination tests English, general knowledge and elementary mathematics, though the exact papers vary by academy choice. Knowing which papers apply to your chosen academy is the first step, since it decides where your effort should go.
The selection does not end with the written examination. Shortlisted candidates attend the Services Selection Board interview, a multi-day assessment of personality, leadership and fitness. Keeping both stages in mind from the start avoids a last-minute scramble later.
Assess where you stand
Before joining any coaching programme, take stock of your current level. A diagnostic test or a set of previous years' papers will show which subjects need the most work. Many graduates are strong in one area and rusty in another, especially mathematics, which may not have been touched since school.
Also be honest about your daily schedule. A working graduate and a final-year student have very different hours available, and the coaching format should fit the time you actually have rather than the time you wish you had.
Choose the right coaching support
Look for a programme that covers the full syllabus in an organised sequence rather than jumping between topics. Ask how the course is structured, how often tests are held and whether you get a detailed analysis of your performance after each test.
Batch size and teacher experience matter. Smaller batches mean more attention, and teachers who have guided CDS aspirants before understand the exam's patterns better. Attend a demo class and speak to former students before committing to any institute.
Build a routine that lasts
Coaching gives structure, but daily self-study does the heavy lifting. Set aside fixed hours for revision, current affairs and practice questions, and keep a simple record of what you finish each week. Small, regular effort beats occasional bursts of intense study.
Stay physically active too, since fitness matters at the interview stage and helps concentration during long study days. With a clear plan, honest self-assessment and consistent effort, the CDS examination is a realistic goal for a well-prepared beginner.
Keep your preparation flexible as well. Review your progress every few weeks, adjust the plan when a subject needs more attention, and do not hesitate to ask teachers for extra help on topics that stay difficult.
