The Central Teacher Eligibility Test has two papers, and coaching institutes handle them quite differently. Paper 1 is for teaching classes 1 to 5, while Paper 2 is for teaching classes 6 to 8, so the subjects, the depth and the teaching approach all change between the two.

What each paper covers

Paper 1 focuses on primary-level teaching, with child development and pedagogy, language subjects, mathematics and environmental studies. The emphasis is on how young children learn and how basic concepts should be taught in a classroom.

Paper 2 covers the middle-school stage, with child development and pedagogy, language subjects, and a choice between mathematics and science or social studies. The subject content is deeper, and questions often test how a teacher would handle concepts with older children.

How coaching splits the syllabus

Most institutes run separate batches or separate modules for the two papers, because the subject mix differs. Shared topics, such as child development and pedagogy and the language papers, are often taught together, while the subject-specific sections are handled apart.

If you plan to appear for both papers, ask how the institute schedules the two. Some run them in parallel, others in sequence, and the timetable matters when your study hours are limited. A clear plan avoids last-minute rushing through one paper at the expense of the other.

Choosing the right paper for you

Your eligibility and teaching goal decide which paper to take. Candidates aiming for primary classes focus on Paper 1, while those aiming for middle-school classes focus on Paper 2. Some candidates prepare for both to keep more options open.

Coaching can help you decide, but the decision should rest on your qualification and the classes you genuinely want to teach. An institute that pushes every student towards both papers, regardless of background, is not giving personal advice.

Preparing for both papers together

Preparing for both papers means managing a wider syllabus without doubling your study time. Good coaching identifies the overlap between the papers and teaches it once, then adds the paper-specific subjects separately. This saves time and keeps revision manageable.

Mock tests should also be paper-specific. A Paper 1 mock and a Paper 2 mock test different subjects and different levels of depth, so practising the wrong one gives misleading feedback. Check that your institute offers separate mocks and separate analysis for each paper.

Understand which paper matches your goal, pick coaching that treats the two papers distinctly, and give each its own preparation time. That clarity is the foundation of a steady CTET plan.
