Dog Training Classes and Pet Behaviourists: Session Fees and Payment Tips

A badly behaved large dog is a liability; a well-trained one is a joy. Professional training in India has matured from the neighbourhood "dog trainer with a stick" into certified behaviourists, puppy socialisation classes and board-and-train programmes — with prices to match. Training is also one of the few pet spends with a measurable return: a dog that walks politely, recalls reliably and does not destroy the house saves its fee many times over in avoided damage, avoided complaints and avoided rehoming.
The Training Menu and Its Prices
| Format | Typical price (metros) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Puppy socialisation class (4–6 sessions) | ₹6,000 – ₹12,000 | Pups 8–16 weeks; the highest-value training there is |
| Basic obedience, group (6–8 sessions) | ₹8,000 – ₹15,000 | Sit, stay, recall, leash manners |
| Basic obedience, private (per session) | ₹1,500 – ₹3,500 | Dogs that cannot focus in groups |
| Behaviour consultation (certified behaviourist) | ₹2,500 – ₹6,000/session | Aggression, anxiety, reactivity |
| Behaviour modification programme (6–12 weeks) | ₹20,000 – ₹50,000 | Serious behaviour cases |
| Board-and-train (2–4 weeks residential) | ₹25,000 – ₹60,000 | Intensive cases; owner follow-up essential |
| Online/video training programme | ₹3,000 – ₹10,000 | Remote areas, budget option |
The puppy socialisation class deserves emphasis: the 8–16 week window is the single critical period for a dog's lifelong temperament, and it closes permanently. A ₹10,000 puppy class is the best money in all of dog ownership. Everything later is remediation, and remediation costs 3–5x more.
Choosing the Trainer: Red Flags and Green Flags
Price is a poor selector; methodology is everything. Green flags: reward-based methods, certification (or at least formal study in animal behaviour), a willingness to train the owner as much as the dog, and references from past clients. Red flags: guaranteed results ("your dog will be trained in 7 days"), dominance-theory language, tools-first approaches (shock collars, choke chains as the starting point rather than the last resort), and trainers who will not let the owner observe sessions. A trainer who will not explain what they are doing is not a professional; they are a magician.
For behaviour cases — aggression, separation anxiety, reactivity — insist on a certified behaviourist with a veterinary referral network, because roughly a third of "behaviour problems" have a medical component (pain, thyroid, neurological). A behaviourist who works without vet input is guessing.
The Payment Structure
Training is usually sold as packages, and the package terms matter:
- Session packs (5/10 sessions) typically discount 10–15% off the single-session rate. Buy the smallest pack first — trainer and dog need to be a fit before committing to ten sessions.
- Validity periods of 2–3 months are standard. A 10-session pack with 2-month validity for an owner who travels fortnightly is a donation to the trainer.
- Board-and-train programmes should include owner handover sessions (at least 2–3) in the quoted price. A dog trained without its owner returns to an untrained household and regresses within weeks. If handover sessions cost extra, the programme is mispriced.
- Cancellation terms for behaviour programmes: illness and family emergencies happen. Get the rescheduling policy in writing before paying.
Most established trainers and academies accept cards and UPI; independent trainers are often UPI-only. For programmes above ₹20,000, paying by card gives both the reward earn and a transaction record — useful if a dispute arises over undelivered sessions.
The Card Angle
Training fees are lumpy service payments — ₹10,000–₹50,000 in one or two instalments. The strategy: pay the programme fee on the card with the best services-category earn, and if the amount strains the month, convert to a short EMI after the fact rather than negotiating a discount for cash. (Trainers offering "cash discounts" of 10%+ are usually just avoiding tax; the receipt is worth more than the discount if anything goes wrong.) For the puppy class specifically, the advice is simpler: do not optimise the payment at all. Just book it in week one. The window closes whether the owner is ready or not.
