Large Appliances This Festive Season: No-cost EMI vs Full Payment

Published: 19 October 2026 Category: comparisons | cardbuzz

A ₹45,000 refrigerator or a ₹60,000 washing machine is the classic festive-season dilemma: no-cost EMI spreads the pain, full payment ends it. With the Dussehra-to-Diwali sale wave (20 Oct – 8 Nov 2026) carrying the year's deepest appliance discounts, the right answer is arithmetic, not temperament — and the arithmetic has a trap most buyers miss.

What "no-cost EMI" actually means

No-cost EMI means the merchant or bank absorbs the interest — your total outflow equals the product price, split across 3–12 months. The key verification: the EMI total must equal the cash price. Check: monthly instalment × tenure = price. If the total exceeds the price, it is a low-cost EMI wearing a no-cost label, and the difference is interest by another name.

Genuine no-cost EMI is free money in time-value terms — you keep your cash longer at zero cost. The catches:

  • Processing fees. A ₹199–₹499 processing fee on the EMI is common and is almost never absorbed. On a 3-month EMI it is a real cost; amortised over 12 months it is negligible.
  • Foregone bank offers. Some instant discounts apply only to full-swipe payments. A ₹2,000 instant discount forfeited for a no-cost EMI is a ₹2,000 cost of the EMI.
  • GST on interest. On paper-no-cost schemes where interest is charged then discounted, GST on the interest component may still apply — read the loan summary, not the banner.

The decision rule

Take no-cost EMI when: the EMI total equals the cash price, no processing fee (or a trivial one), and the bank offer you want is EMI-eligible. Pay in full when: the bank offer is full-swipe-only and its value exceeds the time-value of spreading payment, or the "no-cost" total does not reconcile.

The tenure choice

If EMI wins, prefer the shortest tenure with comfortable monthly outgo. A 3-month EMI preserves cash flow nearly as well as 12-month for most buyers while clearing the liability fast. Long tenures on depreciating appliances mean paying for a machine through half its useful life — and every open EMI reduces your available credit limit until it closes.

EMI terms, fees and offer eligibility vary by bank, merchant and card. Verify the EMI loan summary and the live offer terms before choosing.
