CAT coaching is a large one-time expense, and many aspirants pay for it with a credit card. Done carefully, this can spread the cost and earn rewards; done carelessly, it can add interest and stress to an already demanding preparation period.
Paying in full vs paying in parts
If you can pay the full fee in one go without straining your budget, that is usually the simplest option. You avoid interest entirely, and you can check your statement once to confirm the amount matches what was agreed.
If the full amount is too much at once, check whether the institute offers its own instalment plan first. An institute instalment plan often has clearer terms than converting a card payment into instalments, so compare the two before deciding.
How EMI on a credit card works
Many banks let you convert a large card purchase into equated monthly instalments, commonly called EMI. Instead of paying the whole amount in your next statement, you repay it in fixed monthly amounts over a chosen tenure, with interest and any processing charges added as per your bank's terms.
Before converting a payment to EMI, read the terms carefully: the interest rate, the processing fee, the tenure options and what happens if you miss a payment. The total amount you repay will be higher than the original fee, so work out whether the monthly amount fits your budget comfortably.
Rewards and cashback in general terms
Some credit cards earn reward points or cashback on education or large purchases, depending on the card's terms. Whether your coaching payment earns anything depends on your specific card and how the institute's payment is categorised by the bank.
Do not choose a card or a payment method based on assumed rewards. Check your card's terms first, and remember that any reward is small compared with the interest cost if you carry a balance. Paying the statement in full remains the cheapest way to use a credit card.
Checking your statement after paying
After you pay, check your card statement promptly. Confirm the merchant name, the amount charged and the date all match the receipt and the written fee agreement. If anything looks different, contact the institute and your bank immediately.
Keep the receipt, the written fee terms and the statement together until the course is complete. If a dispute arises later, these documents are your evidence.
A practical checklist
Get the fee in writing, compare the institute's instalment plan with card EMI terms, confirm whether your card earns anything on the payment, and set a reminder to pay each statement on time. A coaching fee paid on a card should make preparation easier, not add financial pressure to it.
