Paying a coaching fee by credit card is convenient, but a large one-off payment deserves a few checks before you swipe. A little care at the payment stage protects you if anything goes wrong later.
Get the total in writing first
Before paying, get the full amount in writing: the course fee, any taxes, and anything charged separately, such as study material or a test series. The figure on the receipt should match the figure you agreed, so compare them before you leave.
Also confirm the refund policy in writing, including how much is refundable and by when, and what happens if you pause or leave the course. A verbal assurance is hard to rely on later, so ask for the terms on paper or in an email.
Pay through a traceable route
Pay directly to the institute through a traceable method, and keep the receipt. Avoid paying through an individual intermediary or in cash without a receipt, since an untraceable payment is very hard to dispute afterwards.
If the institute offers to split the fee into instalments, get the instalment schedule in writing, including the date and amount of each payment. If the instalments are set up as a standing arrangement on your card, confirm how it can be changed or stopped.
Understand any instalment terms
Some institutes offer to convert a large fee into monthly instalments. Before agreeing, ask for the full terms in writing: the number of instalments, any additional charges, and what happens if a payment is missed. Read the terms yourself rather than relying on a summary.
Do not agree to an instalment plan you have not seen in writing. If the terms are unclear, or if the institute cannot provide them, consider paying in a simpler way or choosing another institute.
Check your statement afterwards
After paying, check your card statement to confirm that the amount charged matches what was agreed. If the figure differs, contact the institute straight away and keep a record of the conversation.
Keep the receipt, the written terms and the statement together until the course is finished. If a refund is ever needed, these documents are your evidence. A careful payment is a small effort that can save a large dispute.
Pay only when the amount, the terms and the refund policy are all clear in writing, and always keep your own copies of everything.
