Pet Grooming, Boarding and Daycare: What They Cost and How to Pay Smarter

Published: 18 October 2026 Category: buying-guides | cardbuzz

Grooming, boarding and daycare are the three recurring service spends of pet ownership, and unlike food they are almost entirely paid to local small businesses — the neighbourhood groomer, the boarding farm on the city's edge, the daycare near the office. That changes the payment dynamics: card acceptance is patchy, UPI dominates, and the optimisation is less about reward rates and more about packages, advance booking and avoiding the festive-season price surge.

Grooming: The Breed Tax

Grooming cost in India is essentially a function of coat. A short-coated indie needs a ₹500–₹800 bath-and-nail session every couple of months; a Shih Tzu, Golden Retriever or Husky needs a ₹1,500–₹3,000 full groom every 4–6 weeks, and a matted doodle can be quoted ₹3,500+ for a dematting rescue groom.

ServiceTypical metro price
Basic bath + nail trim (short coat)₹500 – ₹1,000
Full groom, medium coat (bath, cut, nails, ears)₹1,200 – ₹2,200
Full groom, long/double coat₹1,800 – ₹3,500
De-shedding treatment₹1,500 – ₹2,500
Tick/flea medicated bath₹1,000 – ₹1,800
Cat grooming (specialist)₹1,500 – ₹3,000

Annualised, a long-coated dog costs ₹18,000–₹36,000 a year in grooming alone — more than its food. Two levers cut this: grooming packages (most salons sell 6- or 12-session packs at 10–20% off the walk-in rate) and at-home maintenance (a ₹1,500 slicker brush and fortnightly brushing stretches the professional interval from 4 weeks to 6–8). The package is the better deal only if the owner actually uses all sessions before expiry — check the validity period, which is commonly 3–6 months.

Boarding: The Per-Day Math

Boarding in India splits into three tiers:

TierPer-day rate (dog)What it includes
Home boarder (individual)₹500 – ₹900Home environment, limited supervision
Commercial kennel₹800 – ₹1,500Runs, scheduled walks, basic supervision
Premium pet resort/farm₹1,500 – ₹3,000+Large play areas, CCTV access, trained staff

Cats board cheaper (₹400–₹1,000/day) and, honestly, many cats do better with a daily-visit pet sitter (₹300–₹600/visit) than with relocation to a cattery. The price drivers are festivals and long weekends — Diwali and Christmas boarding books out 3–4 weeks ahead in metros, and last-minute festive bookings carry 20–30% surge pricing where it exists, or simply no availability.

The payment reality: most boarders take UPI or bank transfer, and many offer 5–10% off for full advance payment of a 7+ day stay. That advance discount usually beats any card reward — but pay advances only to established businesses with written terms covering illness, escape liability and emergency vet authorisation. A ₹15,000 advance to an unregistered home boarder with no contract is not a discount; it is a risk.

Daycare: The Office-Goer's Subscription

Dog daycare in metros runs ₹500–₹1,200 per day, with monthly packages at ₹8,000–₹18,000 for weekday care. For a dual-income household with a young high-energy dog, daycare 3 days a week replaces a dog-walker (₹3,000–₹6,000/month) plus the guilt. The package math: a ₹12,000 monthly daycare pack used 12 days is ₹1,000/day — barely below the walk-in rate, so the pack only wins on convenience and guaranteed slots. Daycares, unlike groomers, almost universally accept cards, and the monthly pack is a clean standing instruction on the best-earning card.

Paying Small Pet Businesses: The Practical Rules

  • Ask for the card terminal before assuming. Roughly half of neighbourhood pet businesses are UPI-only. For spends above ₹5,000 (boarding fortnights, grooming packs), it is worth asking — many will run the card if asked, and some pass on the MDR while others absorb it.
  • Packages beat walk-ins for grooming (10–20% off) and daycare (guaranteed slots), but only with written validity terms.
  • Festive booking is a calendar item, not a payment item: book Diwali/Christmas boarding by early October, whatever the payment method.
  • Keep one card as the "pet services" card so the annual pet-services total is visible in one statement — most owners are surprised to learn grooming plus boarding exceeds the food bill, and the statement is the only honest accounting.

The Judgement

Pet services are where the "optimise the card" instinct should take a back seat to "optimise the contract". A 2% reward on a bad boarding choice is worthless; a well-chosen boarder with CCTV access and a written emergency-vet authorisation is worth a 20% premium. Spend the analytical energy on selecting the provider — the payment method is secondary, and the best payment method for most of these businesses remains the humble advance-discount bank transfer, negotiated with a contract in hand.
