Post-Diwali Statement Triage: Reconciling EMIs, Refunds and Cashbacks
Published: 19 October 2026 Category: credit-health | cardbuzz
The festive season ends, but its financial tail runs for months: EMIs debiting monthly, refunds trickling back from returns, cashbacks and instant discounts posting (or not) weeks later. The post-Diwali statement triage — done once, in the second half of November — catches the errors that festive chaos hides.
The reconciliation checklist
- List every festive purchase from memory and order confirmations: product, amount charged, payment mode (full swipe / EMI), bank offer expected, card used.
- Match each to the statement. Every purchase should appear exactly once, at the expected amount. Look for duplicates — festive checkout glitches double-charge more often than anyone admits.
- Verify the bank instant discounts. Instant discounts usually reflect at checkout, but bonus-tier extras (like the GIF's ₹250/₹500/₹1,000 tier bonuses) and cashback-style offers can post days or weeks later. Any expected credit missing after 30 days is a follow-up item with the bank.
- Track every return's refund. Fashion and electronics returns from sale season take 7–14 days to credit. List each return with its expected refund date; anything overdue gets chased with the merchant first, the bank second.
- Confirm EMI schedules. Each converted purchase should show its EMI plan with the correct tenure and instalment. A 12-month plan showing as 18 months, or a processing fee you did not agree to, is a dispute.
The cashback follow-up file
For each pending cashback or bonus credit, note: the offer name, the expected amount, the promised credit timeline from the terms, and the date you will follow up. Bank cashbacks typically credit in 60–90 days; diaries beat memory. When the date passes with no credit, the follow-up goes to the bank with the transaction reference and the offer terms screenshot.
The reward-points audit
Festive spending generates the year's biggest points haul — and the year's biggest points errors. Check that accelerated-category earns posted at the right rate (grocery, online, EMI transactions each have their quirks), and that refunded purchases had their points clawed back correctly (not double-clawed). Points discrepancies are easiest to dispute within 60 days.
Closing the festive books
Once reconciled: prepay or schedule the EMIs you can clear early (checking foreclosure fees first), cancel any subscription or trial picked up during the sales, and reset the cards' auto-pay mandates that festive reissues may have broken. The goal is entering December with a clean ledger — every rupee accounted for, every pending credit diary-noted, no mystery charges.
A festival of spending deserves an hour of accounting. The households that do the triage keep the season's savings; the ones that do not quietly donate them back.
Timelines cited are industry-typical patterns. Keep order confirmations and offer-terms screenshots until every credit has posted.
