Tolls, FASTag and Parking: Card Rewards on Two-Wheeler Running Costs

Published: 18 October 2026 Category: buying-guides | cardbuzz

Beyond fuel, a two-wheeler's running costs are a scatter of small recurring charges — FASTag recharges, toll deductions, daily parking, the occasional pollution-under-control certificate. Individually trivial, together ₹400–₹800 a month for a highway commuter. None of them earns accelerated rewards, but the payment method still matters.

How FASTag Recharges Actually Code

FASTag wallets are prepaid instruments, and recharging one by credit card usually codes as a wallet load or quasi-cash transaction. That has two consequences: many banks exclude wallet loads from reward earn entirely, and some treat them as cash-like transactions. Before routing FASTag recharges through a card, check one statement cycle — if the recharge earned zero points, switch it to UPI or netbanking and stop donating the interchange.

The Recharge-Amount Strategy

FASTag wallets earn no interest, so large idle balances are dead money — but tiny frequent recharges waste time and, on some cards, miss minimum-transaction thresholds for earn. The sweet spot for most commuters:

Monthly toll spendSensible rechargeWhy
Under ₹200₹500 monthlyOne transaction, minimal idle balance
₹200–₹500Actual monthly + 20% bufferAvoids mid-month low-balance SMS stress
Above ₹500 (daily highway use)₹1,000–₹2,000 monthlyFewer transactions, same dead-money cost

If your card does earn on the recharge MCC, size the recharge to clear any minimum-transaction condition for rewards.

The Two-Wheeler Toll Exemption (and Its Exceptions)

Here is the good news most riders underuse: two-wheelers are exempt from toll on most national highways in India — the FASTag mandate and its charges were designed around cars and commercial vehicles. But the exemption is not universal. Several expressways and state-managed toll roads do levy two-wheeler tolls, and private parking-cum-toll setups (airport approaches, some bridges) charge bikes too. Before a highway trip, check the specific route's toll policy rather than assuming exemption — an unexpected ₹50–₹150 toll each way adds up on a weekly commute. Where tolls do apply, the FASTag rules above hold; where they do not, that is simply money the car commuter pays and you do not, which is its own kind of reward.

Parking: The Unrewarded Spend

Mall, office and railway-station parking — ₹20–₹100 a visit — almost always codes as a generic retail or services MCC at the base earn rate, and many parking operators are cash or UPI only. Do not contort your card strategy around parking; pay however is fastest at the barrier. Monthly parking passes (₹500–₹1,500) are the one parking spend worth putting on a card, since they are large enough for the base earn to matter.

PUC and Other Micro-Charges

Pollution-under-control certificates (₹60–₹100, valid for a year) and similar micro-charges are cash/UPI territory. The reward on a ₹80 PUC at 2% is ₹1.60 — not worth a second thought. Keep a small UPI balance for these and move on.

The Monthly Running-Cost Map

Fuel₹1,500–₹3,000Fuel card (accelerated)

Parking₹200–₹500Whatever is fastest; card for monthly passes

Running-Cost Checklist

  • Run one FASTag recharge on your card and check the statement: points earned or excluded?
  • If excluded, move all wallet-type recharges to UPI permanently.
  • Size recharges to monthly spend plus a small buffer — never park thousands idle.
  • Buy monthly parking passes on the card; pay per-visit parking however is quickest.
  • Revisit the map once a year; MCC treatments change.

Running costs are won in aggregate, not per transaction. Get the FASTag question answered once, automate the rest, and the few hundred rupees a month take care of themselves.
