When two or more siblings attend the same play school, most schools offer a sibling discount. The discount sounds simple, but its terms vary: which child it applies to, whether it covers all fee components, and how it interacts with other discounts. Paying by card for a family's fees needs clear billing, so the discount is visible and verifiable. This guide explains sibling discounts and family billing.
How Sibling Discounts Usually Work
A sibling discount typically reduces the tuition fee for the second and subsequent children, often by a percentage of tuition only. Ask which child's fee is discounted: usually the younger or the later-enrolled child. Ask whether the discount applies to tuition only, or also to transport, meals, and activity charges. A discount on tuition only is worth less than it appears if transport and meals form a large part of the bill.
Eligibility and Duration
Ask when the discount starts: from the second child's enrolment, or after a waiting period. Ask whether it continues if the older sibling leaves the school, or whether it ends when only one child remains enrolled. Ask whether the discount applies to twins or multiples differently. These edge cases matter for families whose children will overlap at the school for only a short period.
Combining Discounts
Ask whether the sibling discount combines with other discounts, such as advance-payment discounts, referral benefits, or staff discounts. Some schools allow only one discount per child; others stack them. If you pay a year in advance for a discount and also qualify for a sibling discount, confirm whether both apply and how the total is calculated. Get the combined calculation in writing before paying.
Family Billing: One Invoice or Separate
Ask whether the school issues one family invoice or separate invoices per child. A single family invoice is simpler for household budgeting but harder to verify per child. Separate invoices make it easy to check each child's discount application. If the school issues one invoice, ask for a breakdown per child showing the discount applied. Pay by card against the invoice, and keep the breakdown with the payment record.
When Siblings Are in Different Programmes
Siblings may be in different programmes: one in daycare, one in preschool, or one in after-school care. Ask whether the sibling discount applies across programmes or only within the same programme. A discount limited to the same programme may not help a family with children in different stages. Ask also whether the discount applies if one child is in a part-time programme and the other full-time.
Changes: Withdrawal, Graduation and New Enrolment
Ask what happens to the discount when the older sibling graduates or withdraws: whether the younger child's fee reverts to full price immediately, at term end, or never. Ask whether a new sibling enrolling later qualifies automatically. These transitions are common in families, and the discount's behaviour at each one affects the household budget. Note the relevant dates and rules when each child enrols.
Records for Family Billing
Keep each child's enrolment agreement, the sibling discount terms, each term's invoice with its per-child breakdown, and the card payment records together. At each fee revision, check that the sibling discount was applied correctly before paying. If a discount is missing, query it with the previous invoice showing the discount as evidence. Family billing with complete records is easy to verify; without them, a missing discount is hard to prove.
